How can Cannabis be so safe while offering such powerful effects?

In 1988 Francis Young, the DEA’s Chief Administrative Law Judge, in response to a petition to reschedule cannabis under federal law stated “in strict medical terms that Marijuana is far safer than many of the foods we commonly consume. Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis Marijuana can be safely used within the supervised routine of medical care.” The estimated lethal dose of consuming Cannabis is equivalent to smoking approximately 1,500 pounds in 15 minutes. Being as though it is physically impossible, it has never been demonstrated in human beings but test results performed on mice have allowed for scientist to come to this conclusion. It is also why scientists have estimated the Lethal Dose for 50% of the human population. This puts cannabis in a whole other bracket because even relatively safe medications such as aspirin have a lethal dose. In 1995 Dr. Grinspoon wrote an article in “The Journal of the American Medical Association” stating “The greatest danger in the medical use of Marijuana is its illegality, which imposes much anxiety and expense on suffering people, forces them to bargain with illicit drug dealers, and exposes them to the threat of criminal prosecution.” Dr. Grinspoon envisioned that once Cannabis was recognized as medicine that there would be readily available devices in which Cannabis could be vaporized and the devices would be manufactured by many companies. Fast forward today and you can say his predictions were right. The only real concern Dr. Grinspoon’s had was that smoking Cannabis could cause lung cancer and pulmonary diseases. Recent research on the rate of lung cancer and pulmonary diseases among even heavy cannabis smokers has revealed that they have no greater risk of lung cancer, obstructive pulmonary disease, or other adverse effects on pulmonary function than those who smoke nothing at all. Cannabis usually has a calming and comforting effect on the mind, many use it to manage anxiety. However, some people can have a whole different experience, like strong feelings of anxiety while using Cannabis. This perfectly fine, there is just an abundance of THC cannabinoids touching the receptors of your Endocannabinoid System. If this happens to you, there are several things you can do. Try to stay in environments where you feel naturally comfortable. If you feel anxious, sit or lie down, breathe deeply, and relax. If you have friends or loved ones around, hold them for a while. If you have a pet, hold or stroke it. Eating food, often quickly reduces the feeling of anxiety. There are also CBD oils or products like Mary’s Rescue Tonic that can help ease the anxiety of THC. Its also a good idea to keep track of what form of Cannabis you are consuming and the amount consumed. So next time you use Cannabis, you can try to reduce your dosage accordingly. Know that you have a right to your medicine and how you medicate…
