The Fifth most frequently asked question:

What’s the difference between a CBD-rich Marijuana plant and an industrial Hemp plant?

Industrial Hemp is the male of cannabis sativa (to learn more check out our blog “What Is CBD?”) that has a long history of use in the United States dating as far back as Christopher Columbus, which was around the 1600s. Whereas Marijuana became popular around in 1800s, but the main differences are in the way they are used and their appearance. Hemp and Marijuana both come from the same plant family of Cannabis Sativa L. “Hemp” is usually referred to as Industrial or Commercial Hemp. This type of Cannabis stalk is used in many different applications, like seed for textile mills, foods, papers, body care products, detergents, plastics and building materials. While “Marijuana” is usually referring to as medicinal, recreational or for spiritual use. Which usually involves some form of consumption, it could be smoking cannabis flower, eating an infused edible or dabbing some Cannabis oil extract. In our last blog ”Can I Fail A Drug Test When Medicating With CBD?” we mentioned Industrial Hemp contains very little Tetrahydrocannabinoids (THC) about 0.3% or less. On the other hand Marijuana plants can contain about .5% or more of THC, sometimes as high as .23%. The cultivation of Hemp requires no chemicals, pesticides or herbicides and the leaves that fall or shrubs not used for processing fall to the ground replenishing the soil with nutrients, nitrogen, and oxygen. Whereas when cultivating Marijuana you need all of those things in the right combination in order to achieve an optimal environment to be able to grow a healthy Marijuana plant. The reason Hemp has such a low THC% is because most THC is in the resin glands found on the buds and flowers of the Marijuana. Industrial hemp does not to produce buds or flower, and therefore lack the primary components which cause the Marijuana high. While Industrial Hemp has higher concentrations of Cannabidiol or CBD, which actually has a negative effect on THC and lessens its psychoactive effects when used together. Although Hemp technically isn’t federally illegal to grow in any state just need a special permit from the DEA. You will have to do a lot of jumping through hoops to get one, these permits are rarely given out and require that you keep the grow area surrounded by barbed wire fences, cameras, security guards or dogs. All for a crop that has no real potential of getting people high or being addicted, while Marijuana does have the potential of getting people high and is federally illegal to grow in every state. You must take the same measures. The current attitude towards both Marijuana and Hemp in my opinion is just plain ignorance. Meaning there is a huge lack of true education about Cannabis and its history. That is what drove my wife and I to create GreenLyfe.net , We are set out to educate the public with the help of an elite team of indepented GreenLyfe Reps, through at-home direct sales and demonstrations.
