It sucks knowing that if you were suffering from an illness like epilepsy or cancer and are using medical cannabis to treat your condition, which studies have shown to be a better alternative than pharmaceuticals, the thought of being able to lose your job is scary. Even while doing so within full legal compliance with your state’s medical cannabis laws, you can still lose your job! Realistically most of us, (99% of Americans) including patients who use cannabis, aren’t independently wealthy. We must obviously have jobs to generate income to not only pay for meds but for all essentials like shelter, food and clothing. If you know that you will be drug tested, you would just purposely avoid THC products all together. Which is the most common cannabinoid in Cannabis that drug tests are searching for. Basically, drug tests are looking for THC, not CBD or another cannabinoid that isn't psychoactive. (There is more than one form of THC.) If you medicate with CBD-rich Cannabis that has only a small amount of THC, if enough of a THC% is registered you could test positive and a drug tests that searches for CBD would not be an effective law enforcement tool because CBD is non-psychoactive. Meaning it does not cause impairment. Being as though most Hemp grown and all legal CBD Hemp products that are sold in the United States contain .3% of THC or less, with most Hemp having an amount of THC this low makes it nearly impossible for anyone to get any sort of 'high' or euphoric effects from CBD hemp. Most people that are using CBD Hemp Oil products are consuming between 1mg to 40mg of CBD per day. At these levels, the relative amount of THC is so low that any THC present in that person's urine would be low enough to report a negative test result. Negative, meaning the person would "pass" the drug test. On the other hand, the thing to consider here is that, if someone were to take really high amounts of CBD daily like consuming anything over a 1-2 grams per day could possibly test positive or fail a drug test. For example, hemp contains around 1/10th of the THC concentration found in Marijuana. So consuming 1-2 grams per day of Hemp CBD oil would then have basically consumed about 3mg of THC. This may result in positive urine screen if up to 11% or higher is detected. Most drug screenings that test for cannabis follow the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) guidelines, meaning they will not detect a cannabinoid like CBD because this type of testing involve very little “cross-reactivity” between THC and other common cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, CBC, and CBN. When the first test flags positive, there will be a second and more accurate test called GC/MS. This test is administered to the urine sample to confirm if it is an actual positive reading for THC because false positives on the first test are common. The second test can easily tell the difference between THC and CBD. So even if you are a heaviest consumers of CBD oil, rest assured that you won’t lose your job. As long as you don’t consume Cannabis oil that has a high THC%, that is. The keys to ensuring that the CBD oil one is consuming has the proper amount of THC and no harmful contaminants or pesticides is to obtain it from a legal, regulated source. Using the black market may often results in obtaining products that are low in quality, contaminated, or not what they claim to be and the last thing a patient trying to regain their health needs to do is consume an unhealthy, untested CBD oil, especially if those same products can result in a visit to the unemployment office. It is truly unfortunate that CBD consumers are basically forced to to go to these lengths to medicate alternatively.
